Celebration at service for people with sight loss

Guests, volunteers and supporters joined staff and service users at the Pocklingon Resource Centre in Oldswinford, West Midlands last week to celebrate the Thomas Pocklington Trust's 50th anniversary.

Councillor Pat Martin, deputy mayor of Dudley Council was on hand to meet users of the service which provides activities and services to people with sight loss living in the Stourbridge and Halesowen areas.

Services include transcribing documents into Braille and an IT suite. It has text-to-speech and other software for use by service users, for which tuition and support is provided. Trained volunteers also read correspondence, newspapers, magazines and books via a reader scheme, whilst day service activities are tailored to service users' needs and wishes. These currently include aromatherapy, art and crafts, discussion groups, reading newspapers and much more.

Councillor Peter Miller, Dudley Council lead member for adult social care, said: 'It’s very important for the council to work with experienced partners to provide these vital services which are tailored to the needs of service users. I’m very pleased to be part of today’s event to celebrate the success of the trust and the dedication of Thomas Pocklington Trust.'
